Mobile Phone "Cameras"

Some time ago my old trusted Sony Ericsson T68i mobile phone stopped working. It lasted four years, not bad for a mobile phone these days. After some careful consideration I decided to buy a Nokia 6233. My primary use of the phone is to connect my lap top to the Internet when travelling. The Nokia has both UTMS and GPRS EDGE so it's very good for this. All in all, it's a very good phone. BUT, it also have a 2 mega pixel camera. Tests in magzines I've seen conclude this camera is pretty good. I must say this camera is really a big disappointment. Compared to a five years old Nikon Coolpix 950 the Nokia really sucks. Event though the Nikon is also a 2 mega pixel camera and six years old technology, it's a much much better camera. Furtunately I didn't buy the Nokia 6322 because of the camera, but it would have been nice to have to be able to take some snapshots when I don't carry my digital Canon EOS around. As it is, the Nokia's camera is just dead weight and I would have prefered the phone without it. Looks like mobile phone cameras still have a long way to go before they are any competition to even the simplest digital compact cameras.

The key thing is probably the lens and the small space between the lens and the array in a phone. It is unlikely that a mobile phone will ever match a special purpose camera, and it will always be a compromise

Agree with the above post, the main point it has mentioned is "It is unlikely that a mobile phone will ever match a special purpose camera"
